Sharon Larson

Sharon Ann Larson was born on Sept. 2, 1936 to Carl and Clara (Hose) Funk in Sleepy Eye. At an early age the family moved to the farm North of Godahl. Sharon was baptized and confirmed at Albion Lutheran Church. She attended country school and high school in St. James. On Sept. 26, 1951 Sharon married Robert Shellum at Albion Lutheran Church rural St. James. She was active at Albion Lutheran Church and in the ladies organization. During their marriage they farmed on the Shellum homestead and raised their three children until Robert passed away in 1975. Sharon loved being a homemaker, cooking, baking and entertaining family whenever possible

Sharon married Floyd Larson on June 19, 1976 at Albion Lutheran Church and moved to Floyd’s home near Hanska, becoming a step-mom to Floyd’s four children. They farmed and joined Zion Lutheran Church together during their marriage. Sharon was active in the church. At the age of 55, when they retired from farming, Sharon started nursing school fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She worked in New Ulm at several homes for disabled adults during her nursing career until her retirement at the age of 72.

Sharon was a member of the Hanska Library Board. She loved the library and was there every week checking out various materials.

Sharon loved family, visiting with friends, attending family events or entertaining family and friends. She had a lifelong love of learning, reading and enjoyed plays, movies and performances of all kinds. Sharon was “on the go” when she was able. She clipped articles and shared them with family to keep the family informed. Sharon loved making lists. The lists could be found on the kitchen table when the family needed to “catch-up.” She hugged everyone she met sharing a warm embrace.

Sharon passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Nov. 21, 2017 at the age of 81 years. Sharon is survived by her daughter, Jean (John) Discher of Hawick; son, Steven Shellum of Mason City, IA; son, Wayne (Sherry) Shellum of Hanska, four grandchildren and one step grandson; five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Theresa Funk, sister-in-law JoAnn Funk; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends; stepdaughter, Judy Ochs of Mankato; stepson, Terry (Marilyn) Larson of Milwaukee, WI; stepdaughter, Jacky (Greg) Otto of Anchorage, Alaska; stepdaughter, Mary Lou Mikolai of Eagan; 12 stepgrandchildren and 23 stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her mother and father-in-law Jull and Clara Shellum and Emil and Clara Larson; husband Robert Shellum; husband Floyd Larson; brother Robert Funk; brother James Funk; brother and sister-in-law, Vernon and Ella Shellum; brother and sister-in-law, Arlo and Eileen (Larson) Berentson.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017 at Albion Lutheran Church, St. James, with Pastor Robert Springer officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in Albion Lutheran Cemetery, St. James..
