Eldor Wilfahrt

NEW ULM — Eldor Wilfahrt, 90, of New Ulm died Sunday, October 22, 2017 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM Friday, October 27, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Father Mark Steffl celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery with full military honors by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard.

Visitation will be 4 – 7 PM Thursday and 9 – 10:30 AM Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH CHAPEL in New Ulm. The St. Patrick’s Council of the Knights of Columbus and the St. Joseph’s – St. Elizabeth’s Catholic United will pray the rosary at 6 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

He is survived by his children, Rebecca (Dwight) Forstie of Burnsville, Toni Grucky of Phoenix, AZ, Tim (Lois Peterson) of St. Peter, Therese Tendick of Scottsdale, AZ, Helene Bressler of Sunnyvale, CA; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; brother, Donald and sister, Diane; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Cal Verna.

Eldor was born in New Ulm on November 11, 1926 to Ernst and Louise (Soukup) Wilfahrt. He attended Holy Trinity Grade School and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in New Ulm in 1944. Eldor attended St. John’s University graduating in 1948 with a degree in Business Administration. He spent 19 months in the United States Navy serving in the South Pacific. On May 7, 1949 he married Cal Verna Volz at St. George Catholic Church in St. George. They resided in New Ulm their entire married life.

He was employed at Wilfahrt Brothers, a business founded by his father, Ernst and uncle Charles Wilfahrt. In1960 he and his brother, Donald and cousins, Leo and Wallace Wilfahrt took over the business. Eldor headed the Electrical Contracting business and the Toy Department for 38 years, retiring in 1984.

He was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Cathedral parish, where he served in many capacities. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus as a Fourth Degree Knight, Serra Club, Nocturnal Adoration Society of New Ulm and Catholic United.

Eldor was a member of the New Ulm Jaycees, New Ulm Chamber of Commerce, New Ulm Charter Commission, American Legion and DAV. He served on the Boards of Director of the State Bank of New Ulm and Minnesota Valley Funeral Home.

He was very generous with his time visiting elderly and assisting them with some of their concerns. He was well known for his hobby in retirement, painting miniature lead soldiers.
