Gypsy Girl gives voice to area artisans

Gypsy Girl Consignment Boutique Owner Midtbruget shows off a trendy chalkboard sign, giving people on the street the store's basic information. She said the store has expanded greatly since it opened, with nearly 250 consigners with products in the store.

NEW ULM — For local artisans looking to sell their wares, Gypsy Girl Consignment Boutique has filled a need.

Owner Amy Midtbruget said they sell a wide variety of items, from clothing to signs.

“We consign men’s and women’s clothing of all sizes,” she said. “We start at an extra small and go up to a 3x. We also consign accessories like home decor, shoes, jewelry, and purses as well. We have local artisans who make things, bring them in, and sell them through the store.”

Gypsy Girl opened on Aug. 26, 2023. Midtbruget said their first couple of days were extremely busy. She said it was anticipated people would come to check it out, as the building was previously the Ace Hardware and people would want to see the renovations.

Since their opening, the number of consigners who sell their goods through the store has skyrocketed.

Midtbruget shows off a collection of prom dresses. This collection is a new focus for the consignment boutique, as is the new Lil Gypsies children's store.

“We started with about 50 consigners when we opened and we are at almost 250 right now,” Midtbruget said. “We have people coming from a couple of hours away to consign and to shop which is great.”

Midtbruget said some of the major changes they’ve made so far involve store layout. This includes expanding some more popular sections and moving sections around. Their biggest change to date is Lil Gypsies, which looks to open Feb. 15th, will be a separate section of the store dedicated to children’s clothing and accessories.

Midtbruget said this has always been in their plans, but they needed more space before plans could be set in motion.

“When we first moved in here, we didn’t have enough space,” he said. “We have found some room behind where we’re at you can access through Gypsy Girl. We’re going to be opening up that access then and have both stores under one roof.”

Midtbruget said the reception to Gypsy Girl has been positive from both consigners and customers. She said the store has had a major positive impact on consigners both old and young.

Amy Midtbruget stands with employee Aaron Kramer behind the checkout desk. Midtbruget said she and Kramer are the only full-time workers for the boutique.

“Several of them do craft fairs throughout the year,” Midtbruget said. “For some of the older consigners, it’s difficult because they’re requiring more information and they aren’t tech-savvy. I also have three girls under 15 who make things and consign them here at the store. It gives them an outlet to build that confidence they can make something and people buy it.”

With the main focus being successfully setting up and opening Lil Gypsies, Midtbruget said they haven’t had a chance to think further down the road. One thing she said could come in the future is a separate section for branded retail items.

Starting at $4.50/week.
