NEW ULM — Sota Street Studio at 103 N. Minnesota St. offers a hands’on creative outlet in the heart of downtown, where customers of all ages pick, paint and personalize bisque pottery pieces that the studio fires for a durable, food’safe finish.
Tami and Johnny Hanson opened the business in February 2025, inspired by a family trip to a paint’your’own pottery studio in Minot, North Dakota.
“We spent hours painting. It was so relaxing and therapeutic,” Tami Hanson said. “I remember thinking, ‘This is exactly what New Ulm needs!'”
The studio features bright shelves stocked with mugs, plates, bowls and figurines, including seasonal and themed items such as Highland cows. Tables accommodate solo painters or groups, and rotating displays keep the cozy, welcoming space fresh.
Grab & Go kits allow painting at home, and most pieces are ready for pickup in five to seven days after firing.

Since opening, the studio has seen steady growth. Saturdays draw the most visitors, with customizable mugs and plates among the most popular items.
Collaborations with local businesses add variety, including events pairing pottery with plants and beverages.
As of early 2026, the studio employs nine staff members who guide painters, handle firing and help organize events.
Hanson said the focus remains on accessibility and community rather than rapid expansion.
“The goal isn’t to become the biggest studio,” she said. “It’s to remain a space where people can find joy in the act of creating something by hand while making lifelong memories.”
Sota Street Studio is also a member of the New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce, strengthening its ties within the local business community.
Looking ahead, plans include more seasonal items, expanded private events and continued local partnerships.
“If people leave here smiling, then we’ve done our job,” Hanson said.
The Hansons host birthday parties, date nights, girls’ nights, family outings, team’building sessions and events for schools, child care programs, senior centers and 4’H groups. Weekly specials offer discounts for families, seniors, students, couples and military members and veterans (10% off).
Walk’ins are welcome during operating hours: Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Closed Monday and Tuesday.)
