Matthew Carter will present “German POW Camps in Minnesota” during BCHS annual meeting
The Brown County Historical Society (BCHS) will hold its 93rd Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 9, 2023 at the New Ulm County Club, New Ulm, MN. The night will begin with socializing at 6:00pm, followed by a dessert buffet (with a fresh fruit option) at 6:30pm. The business meeting will begin at 7:00pm and the program will follow immediately after.
Matthew Carter is the Executive Director of the Dakota County Historical Society. During World War II, more than 400,000 prisoners of war were sent to the United States after being captured. Prisoners of war were sent across the country where they were placed in camps for the duration of the war. The prisoners were used to offset the labor shortage, working within the communities they were housed and eventually returning home after the war’s conclusion. This presentation will explore the history of the German POW camps that were prevalent throughout Minnesota, including New Ulm.
The event is open to the public. Reservations are required in advance. Reservations can be made at the Brown County Museum until the deadline Friday, November 3rd.
