Produce Tuesday on Aug. 14

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Area Emergency Food Shelf & Second Harvest Food Bank are offering produce, fruit, bakery items and miscellaneous items. Distribution will be Tuesday, Aug. 14 from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at 1305 South Valley Street, New Ulm.

Signup begins at 10 a.m. Bring your own bags or boxes. Please do not arrive more than 30 minutes before the event starts as we will be unloading the truck and setting up. The goal is that no one goes hungry, so this distribution is open to anyone who needs help.

If items are available after our closing time, we may leave some under the awning for you to pick up later that day. Updates will be posted on the New Ulm Emergency Food Shelf Facebook page.

The food given during “Produce Tuesday” is brought from Second Harvest the same day. No food donated for the New Ulm Food Shelf’s normal operations is used for this surplus.

AARP Smart Driver Safety Course offered

NEW ULM — New Ulm Community Education is offering an AARP Smart Driver Safety Course today and Thursday, Aug. 8 and 9m from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Washington Learning Center, Room 104 (door #1), 910 14th North Street New Ulm. Admission fee is $22.

Driving has changed, cars have changed and traffic rules have changed since today’s senior citizens first got their license. Some drivers 55+ have never looked back since they got their first driver’s license, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills.

By taking a driver safety course people will learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment.

You will learn how you can manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. In addition, you will learn how to minimize the effects of dangerous blind spots; how to maintain the proper following distance behind another car; the safest ways to change lanes and make turns at busy intersections; proper use of safety belts, air bags, antilock brakes and new technology found in cars today; ways to monitor your own and others’ driving skills and capabilities; the effects of medications on driving; the importance of eliminating distractions such as eating, smoking and using cell phones.
