NEW ULM — The Scott Hansen comedy show at the New Ulm Country Club has been postponed. It is being rescheduled for sometime in April.

The History of “Decoration Day”

NEW ULM — May 2018 will mark the 150th anniversary of “Decoration Day” or “Memorial Day,” which had its origins in the aftermath of our nation’s deadliest conflict — the American Civil War. In four years of fighting, 750,000 American lives were lost on both sides.

In the wake of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, freed slaves in Charleston, South Carolina had the idea to memorialize all of the Union dead by placing flowers on their graves. Eventually, the idea was picked up by the Grand Army of the Republic, a Civil War veterans’ organization, and culminated in the creation of “Decoration Day,” on May 30, 1868.

Bryce Stenzel, presenter for this month’s Civil War Round Table discussion, is a local historian, author and costumed historical interpreter. Join us at the New Ulm Public Library on Tuesday March 20 at 6:30 p.m. for this interesting presentation. All Minnesota Valley Civil War Round Table meetings are open to the public at no charge.
