NU City Council approves naming rights agreement

The New Ulm Park and Recreation at 122 S. Garden Street will have a new name. Tuesday, the New Ulm City Council approved an agreement with SouthPoint Financial Credit Union for the naming rights to the facility.

NEW ULM – The New Ulm Recreation Center will officially be known as the SouthPoint Recreation Center following the approval of a naming rights agreement by the New Ulm City Council.

Last year, the New Ulm Park and Recreation Commission and the New Ulm City Council approved a professional services contract with Front Burner Sports to secure naming rights for facilities operated by the Park and Recreation Department. Early in the process SouthPoint Financial Credit Union expressed interest in the naming rights for the Recreation Center.

Last week, the New Ulm Park and Recreation Commission was presented with a 15-year naming rights agreement with SouthPoint for the facility. SouthPoint would pay $45,000 a year for naming rights and would have its name added to all exterior and interior signs. In addition, SouthPoint members would receive a discount on Rec. Center memberships. SouthPoint members would receive 10% off a 3-month membership and 15% off yearly memberships.

The agreement was unanimously approved by the Parks commissioners and was forwarded to the city council for final approval Tuesday.

City Manager Chris Dalton said as part of the agreement the city would contribute up to $33,750 for the fabrication and installation of a new sign.

City Councilor David Christian made the motion to approve the agreement with a second from Councilor Tom Schmitz. The council unanimously approve the agreement and thanked SouthPoint.

Council President Andrea Boettger said the naming rights agreement was something new the city was trying and they appreciated SouthPoint stepping up to help city.
