Programs celebrate veterans
NEW ULM — New Ulm and a number of area communities including Sleepy Eye, Springfield, Nicollet, and Mankato will celebrate Veterans Day with a variety of programs Tuesday, Nov. 11.
New Ulm Police Chief and Brown County Commissioner Dave Borchert will speak at the Veteran’s Day Program in the Cathedral High School gym Tuesday.
The event begins at 10 a.m. with Cathedral High School Band music.
VFW Post 1648 Commander and Vietnam Veteran Tom Roesch of New Ulm is Master of Ceremonies.
After the New Ulm Area Veterans Color Guard advances the colors, the Cathedral High School choir will lead the singing of the National Anthem.
The Concord Singers will sing “God Bless America” followed by the Armed Forces Medley by the CHS band.
After Borchert speaks, the Concord Singers will sing the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
The New Ulm American Legion Club salutes veterans with breakfast from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday. Free maid-rites (ground beef on a burger bun) will be served free to veterans at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8.
Schell’s Brewery hosts a Salute to Veterans beginning with a New Ulm Battery cannon shot at 11:11 a.m. Tuesday. Brewery staff that are veterans will release a small batch of Coffee Stout tapped after the cannon blasts. Military uniforms will be on display.
Sleepy Eye
Sleepy Eye Veterans Day programs begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the St. Mary’s School field house and at 10 a.m. in the Sleepy Eye High School auditorium.
Sleepy Eye Mayor Joann Schmidt will speak. The “Star Spangled Banner” will be sung, the “Pledge of Allegiance” read and flag folding will be done.
The Sleepy Eye Serviceman’s Club will serve Mulligan stew at 11 a.m. Tuesday until gone. A Quilt of Valor ceremony with awards for police, fire and ambulance services begins with social hour at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m.
Quilt of Valor eligibility includes active duty, National Guard and reservist members of the U.S. armed forces who served in declared wars, conflicts, police actions, peacekeeping missions, counter terrorism operations or times of peace.
Springfield
Springfield Public School hosts a Veteran’s Day program at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Tiger Center. U.S. Air Force fighter jet pilot Brady Augustin of Sleepy Eye will speak.
Nicollet
The Nicollet County Veteran’s Day dinner begins with social hour at 5 p.m. Tuesday, dinner at 6 p.m. at the American Legion club, 715 3rd St. Nicollet.
The State of Minnesota Veteran’s Day Celebration begins with a free community breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Mankato National Guard Armory, 100 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., Mankato. A World War II historical display and 90-minute PBS WWII documentary file screening follows the program that begins at 10 a.m.
