A. B. Waterston, owner and manager of the Army Store, has been in the business circle of New Ulm during the past few years and in that time has built up a patronage which makes the only exclusive “bargain” store in this city a real success.
Buys Berg Interest
Prior to Mr. Waterston’s coming to New Ulm in 1920, Roy Berg started a store known as the Army Store. The selling of Army goods gave the store its name and that name has been retained by Mr. Waterston since he took possession. Coming to Minnesota from Nashville, Tenn., Mr. Waterston and his family located in New Ulm. At this time he looked about for a location and purchased the established business of Mr. Berg. The location in the Dittbenner Building at 508 Center Street has not been changed. Aside from the good location the structure has a great deal of historical interest. This two story brick building was used as an outpost during the days of the Indian Massacre.
Store Arrangement
Two good sized windows afford space for displavs of merchandise and a center entrance leads to the store room measuring 28 x 20 feet. Along the east side of the room shelving has been arranged which is stocked with Army blankets, shoes, shirts, breeches, caps, overalls, trousers, unionalls, leggings. Army tents are also sold and several kinds have been stocked. Tourists and campers find this store a handy place to shop to find just the things they need for taking long trips. Farmers and townspeople as well, find that their needs can be quickly and efficiently taken care of when they visit this store.
On the south side of the store, underwear, hosiery, sweaters, caps, hats, wrap leggings, gloves, mittens, puttees, and various notions have been arranged on shelves and in show cases. One plate glass show case displays razors, neckties, garters, combs, and numerous other articles. Another case is used for candy and in still another will be found cigars, etc.
In the center are racks showing leather vests, raincoats and men’s overcoats. Only the best of materials are found in the merchandise offered by this store. The stock is not large, but is quite complete, and is of good quality. One of the features of the management is the buying and selling of used instruments, violins, horns,, etc.
The Army Store is operated on a conservative scale, yet it draws many people from this vicinity to New Ulm to trade. The majority of the patronage comes from New Ulm, and the immediate vicinity, altho at times, customers who come from many miles to shop in New Ulm find what they want at the Army Store. This business is successful and for that reason does its part toward making New Ulm the trading center of Southwestern Minnesota.
