Carol Steinhaus, a 52-year Turner Lady, was cutting pealed apples with volunteers Debra Berg, Yvonne Weber and others in the Turner Hall basement meeting room Tuesday.
“I just keep on going,” said Steinhaus. “We used to make apple strudel but that got so expensive, we decided to make apple crisp instead with local apples that are not treated. We get a lot of good comments on it, so I guess we’ll stick with it.”
The pealed apples are placed in a lemon water bath to add subtle tartness that compliments apple sweetness before they become apple crisp.
The apple process began early because an ample number of volunteers were available. The apple crisp will be frozen after it is made.

A community organization focused on promoting social, cultural and recreational activities for women, the Turner Ladies organize gatherings, including luncheons, suppers and holiday celebrations, fostering community connections. They often engage in community service projects, supporting local charities and initiatives and collaborate with other organizations to promote community welfare and development.
Membership is open to women interested in participating in the group’s activities and contributing to community efforts.
Turner Laddies Dave Christensen, Kevin Kretsch and others turned apple pealer cranks in Turner Hall too.
The supper is take-out only, 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25 from the Turner Hall rear entrance. The menu is landjaegers, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, rye bread and apple crisp.
