14-year-old male leads state patrol on hour-long chase

Teen tries to flee on foot after crashing vehicle into ditch

NEW ULM — Following an hour long chase with law enforcement early Wednesday night, a 14-year-old juvenile male was taken into custody near the Highway 14/15 roundabout east of New Ulm.

The Minnesota State Patrol stopped a Chevrolet Tahoe for speeding and no front license plate near the intersection of Highway 15 and 330th Street, Lafayette Township, a mile north of Lafayette at 5:50 p.m. Wednesday.

The vehicle initially stopped, then fled the traffic stop. The trooper pursued the vehicle south on Highway 15 past Lafayette and Klossner before it crashed into a ditch near the Highway 14/15 roundabout.

The driver, later identified as a 14-year-old male, fled on foot. He did not suffer any crash-related injuries. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, according to the State Patrol.

The juvenile suspect was apprehended in a wooded area east of the Minnesota River in Nicollet County. He was transported to Chaska and booked into the Carver County Juvenile Detention Center for suspected fleeing police in a motor vehicle. An investigation remains open, according to the State Patrol.

Nicollet County Sheriff Dave Lange said his department, the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, New Ulm Police, State Patrol, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and other agencies used K-9 dogs and drones to locate and take the suspect into custody at about 8 p.m. Wednesday.
