MPCA issues statewide air alert

Until 6 p.m. Monday

ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) issued an air quality alert for all of Minnesota Friday that continues to 6 p.m. Monday, June 2.

A cold front will drag smoke from Manitoba and Saskatchewan wildfires. The highest smoke concentration is expected Saturday morning and afternoon. Air quality will improve slightly Saturday overnight before a second wave of smoke arrives Sunday morning. Air quality will improve Sunday night before a third round of smoke arrives Monday.

Fine particle levels are forecast to reach the red air quality index, a level considered unhealthy for everyone, across all of Minnesota. This area includes Brainerd, Bemidji, Two Harbors, Hibbing, Ely, and Duluth. Sensitive groups should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion and limit time spent outdoors.

Fine particle levels are expected to reach the orange air quality index, a level considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, across southern Minnesota including the Twin Cities metro, Alexandria, Albert Lea, Marshall, Worthington, Rochester, Winona, and Mankato.

People in sensitive groups are encouraged to reduce outdoor physical activities, take more breaks, or do less intense activities to reduce exposure. People with asthma should follow their asthma action plan and keep their rescue inhaler nearby.

Sensitive groups include people with asthma or other breathing conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, pregnant people, children and older adults.

Anyone experiencing health effects related to poor air quality should contact their health care provider. Those with severe symptoms, chest pain, trouble breathing, or who fear they may be experiencing a heart attack or stroke should call 911 immediately.

Precautions include keeping residence windows closed to keep smoke outside.

Starting at $4.50/week.
