Sleepy Eye fire victim dies

SLEEPY EYE — A 29-year-old Sleepy Eye woman critically injured in a May 8 house fire on 3rd Ave. N.E. died Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye Police were contacted by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office Tuesday evening that Katie Rehbein died as a result of injuries sustained in the fire.

“Our department wishes to express our deepest sympathy to the family, friends, and anyone affected by this loss and incident as a whole. We have no further information to release at this time,” read a Sleepy Eye Police Investigation Report released Wednesday.

Due to smoke inhalation and extensive burns, Rehbein was transported to Sleepy Eye Medical Center (SEMC) and later to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) due to smoke inhalation and extensive burns. Her three-year-old son was also transported to SEMC and HCMC after the fire.

Four other occupants of the house that was extensively damaged in the fire — Mindi Rehbein, 56; and 11 and 6-year old males plus an 8-year-old female were treated and released from SEMC.

The fire source is under investigation by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal who did not determine the actual fire cause but ruled out foul play, according to Sleepy Eye Police.
