Book launch for author raised in New Ulm a chance to reconnect

Susan Weissmann-Huehn checks to make sure she signed a book for Mike Oetken as they reconnect at her book signing Sunday night. Oetken knew Weissmann-Huehn as a child, when she lived two doors down from him.

NEW ULM — New Ulm native Susan Weissmann-Huehn got to go where her book began for a book signing event Sunday night.

Weissmann-Huehn met her husband Klaus over Schell’s beer at Heritage Fest in 1983. After his passing and dealing with the grief from that, “The Widow’s Guide to Becoming a Handyman” made its way to Schell’s Brewery. Weissmann-Huehn has been to several places since her book was released around a month ago. Most notable was the Minnesota State Book Fair, located on the State Fairgrounds. She said the experience has been both overwhelming and exciting over the past few weeks.

Several people came to get their copy of the book signed. Some bought a copy there, while others had bought their copies elsewhere and had it signed there. Weissmann-Huehn said the experience allowed her to reconnect with people from her past.

“It was really fun seeing people from all stages of my life,” she said. “I met someone who my grandfather shooed horses for. My grandparents’ doctor was here. Up until friends I have in the present.”

This also included classmates from New Ulm Public, where she graduated in 1981. Deb Sjostrom said she had fallen out of touch with Weissmann-Huehn after graduation. After hearing about the book online, she knew she had to come to the event.

Susan Weissmann-Huehn signs a book for an attendee at Schell’s Brewery Sunday night. She said it has been a whirlwind experience since her book was released around a month ago.

“I was really curious about the book after I read the news,” she said. “I’m excited to read about it and catching up with her life. It’s nice to connect with somebody I know who’s written a book. It’s one of the first books of this size where I’ve known the author.”

Sjostrom said the choice of venue was interesting, as it connected with the beginning of Weissmann-Huehn’s story with Klaus. She has not read the book yet, but she is excited to get started and learn from Weissmann-Huehn’s story.

“I want to get to know Susan’s life better,” Sjostrom said. “Should I or anyone I know ever be in her predicament, it might be a book I would share with a friend.”

Weissmann-Huehn said she plans on hosting another book signing at a local bookstore but has not settled on a date. For more information, visit https://susanhuehn.com/
