Guten Tag to the Christmas Haus

NEW ULM– The Christmas Haus is saying hello where the Guten Tag Haus had said “Auf Widersehen” (Goodbye)

The Christmas Haus has officially opened for business. They are opened in the same location, the corner of 127 North Minnesota Street, that the Guten Tag Haus had been before they closed their doors in January of 2023. Guten Tag Haus owners Cindy and Al Stabenow were retiring and Lindsey Henn would start a similar business, keeping the employees from the Guten Tag Haus when they reopened.

Those plans have come through, and the business is now fully open for customers.

The Christmas Haus contains the German import items that were a major part of the Guten Tag Haus, and Lindsey Henn has expanded into Scandinavian items, including products from Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

German items include cuckoo clocks, archways, steins, hats and pins, and ornaments. Scandinavian products include kitchen items, hunting and fishing knives, as well as an assortment of felt items. There is a large variety of items, with something for everyone who stops in. Lindsey Henn said instead of one or two items being best sellers so far, customers have been buying several different items from their wide selection.

Lindsey Henn, the owner of the Christmas Haus, stands at the checkout desk in the middle of the store, surrounded by store items.

A fixture of the store is their flower and candy carts. They are designed to resemble the carts which vendors have used to sell their items in Europe for centuries. The interior of the building retains much from the Guten Tag Haus, with walls painted gray to show off the colors of their products.

One item that will be available in the future is German beer. The business is working on getting an off-sale liquor license to make six packs of authentic German beer available.

The items are all imported directly from European countries. The items are also from small artists and shops, who hand-make items when they are ordered. This makes the Christmas Haus a one-stop shop for authentic European items, a task Henn said has been smooth sailing.

As for her favorite items, Lindsey Henn recommends their Vinyl Rugs. She said that they are indoor/outdoor, and as long as you hose it down when it gets dirty it will look like new for 25 years.

The store is currently open from 10am to 6pm from Monday through Friday, 10 to 5 on Saturday, and 12 to 4 on Sunday.
