Committee approves Patterson’s redesign

New Ulm– The Heritage Preservation Committee this week passed the renovation design for Patterson’s Diamond Center.

The commissioners were pleased with the re-design of Patterson’s frontage. It met their standards for historical preservation as well as architecture.

This comes after the previous re-design was tabled at February’s meeting. Reasons included the design being too modern and lacking details on window dimensions. The designer was not aware the building was under historical regulation, and tabling provided Patterson’s with the historic requirements to provide a mock-up that is up to code.

The building will retain some of the original features, including the diamond sign next to the store name and the sunk-in entrance. There are also plans to fix the clock that stands out front using renovation budget money.

The biggest changes are to the area damaged when the vehicle struck the outside of the building in late November. There will be two larger glass windows taking up the full area where the overhangs are now. They will be separated by bronze columns.

Questions about the redesign were sparse from the committee. Initial concerns from Ron Bruntlag and Cara Knauf included the windows’ darkness and the relative lighting compared to other business. This was said by the designers to be a render quirk, and they would be light for window shopping.

The city will also be receiving grant money to cover signage related costs in the near future, of which $2,000 would be available to the Patterson’s renovation team.

The owners and designers said that they were very pleased with the results of the meeting and were looking forward to starting on the renovation process.

The project is expected to be finished before the snow begins to fall.
