NEW ULM — Harold Enamorado calls his new downtown business a place for people to go to build stuff and buy materials to build home projects.

CALA DIY Center had a soft opening last weekend at 417 1st St. South.

“It’s a good place for people to relieve stress and get creative,” said Enamorado. “People can bring their kids. We sell black walnut and red cedar wood slabs for people to build things like coffee tables.”

Business hours are 3-7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and by appointment.

“It’s good for birthday and office parties. Everybody gets a project kit,” Harold said.

He and his wife Jayme also operate CALA Contemporary Woodwork, 1200 N. Water St.

The business specializes in handmade furniture made of wood and metal. Products are made based on the firm’s own designs. They take custom orders for commercial and residential customers.

The firm mills salvaged trees from local sources. Wood is kiln dried in the shop. Clients are provided digital 3D models for a good idea of how the product will look when completed.

Born and raised in Honduras, Harold spent much of his childhood working in his father’s furniture factory. Originally a welder, he learned woodworking skills in the factory.

The business specialized in console, coffee, conference, side and dining tables, benches, night stands, desks and doors.
