NEW ULM — Eleven talented performers gave it their all during Friday night’s New Ulm Sings competition at State Street Theater.
The performers sang everything from opera arias to classic show tunes. The competition was held in two age classes, 13-20 years and 21 and older, with judges Jenny Haugen and Eric Harstad ultimately choosing the top winners in each category.
In the 13-20 year division, Lilianna Rindal of Lilydale, Minnesota, took second for her performance of “Rise Up” by Andra Day.
Audrey Beranek of Lafayette took first for her performance of “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor.
In the 21 and up category, Bethany Derrickson of Sleepy Eye took second for her rendition of “Der Holle Rache Kocht In Meinem Herzen” (Queen of the Night) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Michael J. Koester took first for his performance of “Corner of the Sky” from the musical “Pippin.”
The four winners will move on to the statewide singing contest called Minnesota Sings, that will also be held at State Street Theater.
Minnesota Sings coordinator Chuck Spavin praised the New Ulm Sings regional competition and was excited to announced the Minnesota Sings finale will have over 53 singers.
The competition will be held over two days on Oct. 1-2 at State Street Theater.
