Two arrested in NU for discharging firearms
Shooting at former Target building
NEW ULM — A 34-year-old man and 40-year-old woman both of New Ulm were arrested early Friday morning after police responded to two reports of gunshots heard on the south side of town.
Charges filed Friday in Brown County District Court against Erasmo Ozuna Jr. include felony firearm possession with a previous felony conviction, felony reckless discharge of a firearm within a municipality and felony fifth-degree drug possession-not small amount of marijuana. Stark was charged with felony reckless discharge of a firearm within a municipality and gross misdemeanor carrying a weapon without a permit.
New Ulm Police responded at 8:46 p.m. Thursday for a report of gunshots near 15th Street South and German St. Witnesses said a man wearing camouflage pants, a blue shirt and orange hat was standing near an electrical box, then began running west.
Officers searched an open field and found 16 .40 caliber handgun casings in the grass and weeds that appeared to be freshly fired.
At 5:02 a.m. Friday, police responded to 13th Street South and German Street for a report of gunshots. Canvassing the area, police saw two individuals near a picnic table at South Park, directly behind the former Target store building.
Police noticed the man wearing all camouflage with an orange hat and recognized him as Ozuna, who was arrested in the past for felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Ozuna confirmed his identity. The woman was identified as Lindsey Stark.
Officers noticed a small, black handgun in the grass near the picnic table before arresting Ozuna, who confirmed he was a felon and carried a firearm for protection. Officers searched him and found two 40 caliber bullets, a lighter and container of alprazolam with tablets.
Officers found a .40 caliber Glock in the grass with ammunition in the magazine. Ozuna admitted to firing the gun in the former Target loading dock. Officers found more spend casings near the loading dock and multiple bullet impact marks on the building wall.
Stark was detained and admitted she had a handgun, a Glock pistol in a fanny pack that was loaded 10 rounds of hollow point 9mm ammunition. She admitted she did not have a permit to carry a firearm and was arrested and taken to the Brown County Jail.
A court hearing for Azuna was set for 10:45 a.m. Monday, April 20. He was convicted of felony aggravated robbery Oct. 19, 2015 in Texas. Stark’s court hearing is set for 11:45 a.m. April 20.
