Highway 19 closure extended two weeks

The detour for Highway 19 from Winthrop to Gibbon will be in place approximately two weeks longer as more extensive repairs are necessary, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

MnDOT crews diverted water away from the damaged area last week in an effort to make emergency repairs. Based on the discovery of more damage to a culvert, it was determined that more extensive repairs are necessary to the culvert and roadway, including the removal of pavement.

Traffic will continue to be detoured to Highway 15, and Sibley County Roads 25 and 22.

MnDOT reminds motorists that it is illegal to drive around the barricades on a closed road, and individuals can be fined up to $1,000 and 90 days in jail.

Highway 19 between Winthrop and Gibbon closed on May 12 and repairs were expected to be complete within one week. MnDOT is working as quickly as possible to complete the repairs and reopen the road by late May, weather permitting.

Motorists are encouraged to check 511mn.org before traveling for information on road conditions, closures, and detour routes. Information will also be shared on the MnDOT South Central MN Facebook group and the MnDOT District 7 Twitter account.
