NEW ULM — An exhibit showcasing the recent work of Minnesota State University, Mankato, printmaking students opens Friday, with a 6:30 p.m. reception at the 4 Pillars Art Gallery at The Grand Center for Arts & Culture.

The prints featuring a variety of subjects and styles are a collaboration of Prof. Josh Winkler’s intermediate and advanced printmaking students and Prof. Michael Torres’ poetry students. The works use a traditional printmaking process, including silkscreen or relief, alongside handset letterpress poems.

“I’m excited for everybody to come together on this,” Winkler said.

“This is my first time to show in a gallery like this. I hope lots of people come to look at the art,” said printmaking student Alice Smith of St. Peter.

The Schwictenberg identical twins of Mankato are also excited.

“I’m excited to show watercolor sketches for the first time. It’s a great opportunity to display art,” said Kayla Schwichtenberg. “I hope to go into publishing children’s books. I like drawing silly things.”

Rachel Schwictenberg said she likes nature and art with underwater themes.

Minnesota State University, Mankato law professor Wade Davis said he was excited for personal reasons.

“It’s fun doing something out of my profession,” he said. “It’s been a life-saver and a lot of fun for me to do art during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The exhibit continues from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, until March 25.
