GFW school board to consider new hires

Jacobson as head boys basketball coach

GIBBON — The Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop (GFW) School Board will consider approving new personnel hires on Monday, Oct. 18 in the Gibbon Elementary School gym.

New hires include theater/play director Samarah Forster, paraprofessional April Gunderman, head boys basketball coach Ryan Jacobson, van driver Lyna Kaskinen, middle/high school head cook Amy Foster and Nicole Jaus, T-Bird Club.

The school district transportation team will be recognized early in the meeting.

Elementary Principal Jennifer Thompson reported conscious discipline supplies arrived, teachers unpacked them and incorporated activities in their morning routine.

“We will continue to emphasize expected behavior and recognize classrooms who do an excellent job,” Thompson reported.

In addition, Thompson said the T-Bird Community Art Board is determining interest and availability to do a December cantata. A paint and party is scheduled in February and a talent show in April.

“Students enjoyed lunch and recess visits from the GFW football team,” Thompson reported. “Students look up to these players and get very excited to have them visit.”

She thanked the Gibbon Fire Department for doing a fire safety demonstration and bringing fire trucks to students.

Facility Manager Dave Sellner reported OSHA-required safety training in confined spaces was completed. In addition, Hoffman Electric installed new kiln wiring and special education room appliances and Alpha Wireless will update school building radios.

The board plans to meet in executive (closed) session to discuss Superintendent Jeff Horton’s performance evaluation.

The board meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18.
