SE crash leads to DWI charges

SLEEPY EYE — An Aug. 24 two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 4 and Elm Street N.W. led to two gross misdemeanor third-degree DWI charges filed Wednesday against a 19-year-old Sleepy Eye woman.

A Brown County District Court appearance for Millicent M. Sorenson, 533 1/2 2nd Ave. N.W., Sleepy Eye, was set for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 12.

According to court documents, Sleepy Eye Police Investigator Shawn Bohnen was dispatched to a car-semi crash at 2:57 p.m. Aug. 24. At the scene, a Sleepy Eye Fire Department member told Bohnen he stopped at the scene and Sorensen was bleeding from the head and refused to stay in her vehicle and showed intoxication clues.

Bohnen saw Sorenson was bleeding from her left forehead and leaning against a white Pontiac Grand Prix when she told him she was driving from her residence to work when she hit the semi. Bohnen noticed intoxication signs.

A Sleepy Eye Ambulance arrived several minutes later with an Emergency Medical Technician. In the ambulance, Sorenson admitted to Bohnen she had been drinking alcohol. She agreed to take a Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test and failed it.

Sorenson agreed to take a Preliminary Breath Test that read .197 blood alcohol content. She was arrested for DWI.

Bohnen talked to the semi driver who said he was southbound on TH 4 when he saw a northbound white Grand Prix cross the centerline into his lane. The semi driver said he tried to avoid the crash but the Grand Prix hit his trailer.

Bohnen got a blood draw search warrant and executed it at Sleepy Eye Medical Center. A blood kit was entered into evidence, placed in a secure mini refrigerator and mailed to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) for testing.

Test results received Sept. 14 from the Minnesota BCA showed an ethyl alcohol concentration of 0.188.
