GFW School Board meets Feb. 8

Gibbon offers $2k donation

GIBBON — The Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop (GFW) School Board meets at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 8 in the Gibbon Elementary gym for a regular board meeting and closed session.

Agenda items include a closed session for preliminary consideration of allegations against an employee.

In her report, GFW Junior and Senior High Principal Brittany Galetka said she is excited to begin the new semester.

“It feels similar to the first day of school. In fact, we have had several families join our school and/or return from distance learning,” reported Galetka.

She said the National Honor Society finished up their food drive and the 8th-grade class will receive a prize in celebration of donating the most amount of food.

“We are working with all our students on a new grade checking process to maximize student learning and achievement,” said Galetka.

She said students are scheduled to stake the ACT Test on Tuesday, March 30.

GFW Facility Manager Dave Sellner said required safety training on slips, trips and falls were completed by staff.

Sellner said Mages Land Company & Auction Service completed an online auction for items left in Fairfax.

“Auction results were very good, with a much higher dollar amount than expected,” said Sellner.

In addition, he said there is a sufficient inventory of disposable masks.

The board will consider a number of donations including $48.52 from Lori Dittrich of the Catholic Aid Foundation for the 3M Work Program. Treat bag donations included $50 from the Fairfax Club and $25 from Ogren Insurance. The City of Gibbon is offering a $2,000 robotics donation.

The board will consider a 2021 legislative platform:

• Adding 1% and 2.5% on the basic formular over the next two years.

• Fully-funding special education and eliminating cross-subsidy.

• Continuing the Ag2School (tax) credit to support agriculture and timber landowners.

• New funding for English Language Learners.

• Supporting the Teachers of Color and American Indian Teachers Initiative.

The board meeting will be live streamed on the school Facebook site.
