SE man charged with child endangerment

SLEEPY EYE — A 39-year-old Sleepy Eye man faces a gross misdemeanor charge of neglect or child endangerment for allegedly towing a child in a wagon pulled behind a moped on Sept. 30.

According to court documents, Sleepy Eye Police received multiple complaints regarding Jeffrey R. Krenz, 616 1st Avenue E., driving a moped and pulling a child with a rope attached to a red wagon near Ellsworth Street in the southeast part of town.

One person sent photos and a cell phone video of the activity to police. Citizens were particularly concerned because they said the rope was 20 to 25 feet long and the moped crossed State Highway 4 on the south end of town.

Citizens told police, who are familiar with Krenz, that he was the moped driver.

Police located a moped with a wagon tied to it with a rope at a 3rd Avenue N.E. residence, found Krenz outside the residence and told him of the reported complaints. Krenz admitted he pulled the wagon behind the moped with his four-year-old daughter in it.

Krenz told police he was told several months earlier by another officer that he could not drive the moped with his daughter on the seat, but he did not see a problem with pulling her behind the moped.

A court appearance was set for 8:30 a.m., Dec. 29.
