60 years and counting

Joann and Willard Bastian of New Ulm wave to their family and friends who gave them a parade in honor of their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday.

NEW ULM — Willard and Joann Bastian of New Ulm were spending their 60th wedding anniversary much the way they have been spending their time since the COVID-19 virus crisis hit — staying home by themselves and watching TV.

Then, a knock on the door came and a family member urged them to come out on the front porch. Soon a parade of cars decorated with signs and balloons cruised by, honking their congratulations. With four children and nine grandchildren, along with several friends in line, it took quite a while as they cruised back and forth past their home on Bianchi Drive.

Joann said the family has been good about visiting while keeping their distance, but the parade was a welcome surprise.

Asked about the secret was for a long and happy marriage, Willard answered, “Work hard, I guess, and fight like hell.”

“And feed ’em good,” Joann answered.
