NEW ULM — The St. Paul’s Lutheran Elementary School math team took first place in the Traverse de Sioux Chapter MathCounts meet Monday in Mankato and advanced to the state meet.

Hutchinson Public and Lake Crystal Welcome Memorial (LCWM) schools finished second and third, respectively, and also advanced. Public and private schools from St. Peter, New Ulm, and Mankato were represented in the meet.

Individually, Bethany Spike had the highest score for St. Paul’s, finishing in 3rd place, which would have qualified her individually for state. Gavin Schaefer represented St. Paul’s in the countdown round and finished 1st in it.

The state competition is on March 13-14 at the Crown Plaza in Plymouth.

Beside Spike and Schaefer, St. Paul’s official team included Joshua Carlovsky and John Balge.

St. Paul’s students Preston Holm, Asher Bakke, Meaghan Martin, and Mercy Dobberpuhl took part in the meet as individuals.
