Schiefferts, Drake win 4-H Open Class Market Hog titles

NEW ULM — Olivia, Stella and Joe Schieffert of Sleepy Eye and Mady Drake of Comfrey dominated the 4-H Open Class Market Hog show at the Brown County Fair Friday.

Drake, 10, of the Comfrey Comets 4-H Club, showed the Champion Market Hog and Champion Market Boar.

“I like working with pigs. They’re fun to walk,” Drake said, about “Jack,” her cross-bred boar. She is active in the Just For Kix danceline and enjoys fishing.

Olivia Schieffert, 9, has been raising pigs for five years. She showed the Grand Champion Market Gilt. Stella Schieffert, 7, showed the Reserve Champion Market Gilt.

“It’s fun. It gives me something to do in summer,” Olivia Schieffert said. “We raise and sell baby pigs at my great grandma’s farm.”

Olivia Schieffert’s other interests are volleyball, basketball and softball.

Stella Schieffert, 7, began raising pigs three years ago. The Schieffert girls belong to the Sleepy Eye Wide Awakes 4-H Club.

Joe Schieffert of Sleepy Eye showed the Reserve Champion Overall Market Hog and Market Gilt.

Taylor Franz of Bingham Lake showed the Reserve Champion Market Boar.
