Pedestrian severely hurt in crash

NEW ULM — A pedestrian was severely injured in a crash that also involved a motor vehicle in New Ulm on Tuesday, according to a New Ulm police press release.

Paulette Schmeling, 65, of New Ulm, was transported to the New Ulm Medical Center via ambulance and then to the Hennepin County Medical Center via helicopter with severe injuries, said the press release.

The accident happened at approximately 7:28 a.m. at First North and Garden Streets.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Joseph Lamecker, 73, of New Ulm. Lamecker was not injured in the crash.

An investigation shows that Schmeling was in a crosswalk, walking west across North Garden Street. Speed, alcohol and cell phone usage were not factors in the crash, said police.

The crash is being investigated by the New Ulm Police Department. The New Ulm Police Department was assisted at the crash by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and Allina Ambulance.

This crash marks the third vehicle versus pedestrian crash in New Ulm in the past 45 days, said police. The New Ulm Police Departments reminds all drivers to be observant of their surroundings as they travel. The New Ulm Police Department will continue to work with community partners to ensure safety of those who walk and drive in the community, said the press release.
