Sows, gilts die in rural Hector fire

HECTOR — About 500 sows and 700 multi-aged guilts died in a barn fire in Brookfield Township, about 7 miles north of Hector, Tuesday night.

The Renville County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 10:10 p.m. about a fire at a hog containment facility owned by Ten Brook Pork, LLP, at 86363 490th St. At the scene, firefighters found one barn fully engulfed with a significant collapse. A second barn had a heavy interior fire. Firefighters from Hector, Buffalo Lake and Cosmos worked to save and protect adjacent and connected barns. One barn burned and collapsed. A second barn had significant damage. Both buildings are considered total losses.

The cause of the fire is being investigated. Foul play is not suspected. The Renville County Sheriff’s Office and Buffalo Lake Police assisted at the scene.
