Bar fight police call leads to arrests

NEW ULM — A bar fight at Smiley’s Tavern, 425 N. State St. Friday night led to a series of events that concluded with the arrest of two men from out of state.

New Ulm Police responded to a fight call at Smiley’s at 9:48 p.m. Friday. At the scene, officers learned that two suspects had fled the scene.

A short time later, police were called about a man on the ground behind Domino’s Pizza, 315 N. Minnesota St. After a short foot chase, police arrested a 23-year-old Missouri man who was one of the people involved in the fight at Smiley’s. The suspect, who has a Missouri arrest warrant for felony domestic assault, was transported to Brown County Detox.

Officers were then requested at the Lamplighter Sports Bar & Grill, 214 N. Minnesota St. where a 58-year-old Iowa man, the other man involved in the earlier fight call at Smiley’s, entered the establishment full of blood. The man was transported to the New Ulm Medical Center for injuries sustained in the fight.

At 9:20 a.m. Saturday, police learned that the Iowa man was outside of detox, banging on the windows, trying to get in. Officers responded but were unable to locate him.

At 1:12 p.m. Saturday, police were called by management at the Affordable New Ulm Motel, 1427 S. Broadway, regarding a man who was highly intoxicated and making threats. Police located the man, who was the Iowa man, arrested him and transported him to the Brown County Jail.
