Lockdown at WLC

NEW ULM — A scare at Washington Learning Center (WLC) resulted in a short lockdown near the end of the school day.

Police were dispatched to a conflict near WLC at 2:43 p.m. Thursday after receiving reports of two adults arguing.

“While they were en route, another report came into dispatch saying they saw a gun in somebody’s waistband and (someone) threatened to shoot somebody,” Superintendent Jeff Bertrang said.

Staff inside WLC overheard the commotion and Principal Dawn Brown went outside to investigate.

While she was outside, police contacted WLC, after learning of the alleged weapon. The school initiated lockdown after receiving the call.

It was lifted shortly after, when the suspect was located at their home about a mile from the school.

Police were able to verify that neither suspect had a weapon during the conflict.
