NEW ULM — A fire damaged a trailer home in the Skyview Trailer park near Highway 15 and 68 Saturday.

Scott Schaible of Mankato and his two sons were driving past the park on Highway 15 when they saw smoke at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday. They pulled into the park and saw the smoke coming from the trailer at #24.

“We opened the door and called out to see if there was anyone inside. The place was full of smoke,” Schaible said.

The Schaibles entered the trailer to see if anyone was inside. No one was, so they called 911 and started removing the animals inside, and other possessions and valuables, including some furniture and electronics.

“We breathed a little too much smoke,” said Scott. One of his sons was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, then taken to the New Ulm Medical Center for treatment. There were no other reported injuries.

The owner of the trailer said he and and his fiancee were at the Best Western Plus helping set up for a child’s birthday party when they got the call that their their home was on fire.

The New Ulm Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Hanska Fire Department, which provided a tanker truck to help bring water to the scene.

The owner of the trailer, who did not wish to be identified, said he had not received the title to the trailer from the park owner, so he hasn’t been able to buy insurance.

“Everything I had was in that trailer,” he said.
