Gymnasium, theater on RENU agenda
NEW ULM – Turner Hall wishes for a new gymnastic facility and State Street Theater Company wishes for renovations to its building.
Those wishes will be presented to the Reinvest in New Ulm Committee (RENU) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, in city hall. Representatives from Turner and the theater group will present their projects to RENU in hopes of gaining support for funding from the renewal of the Local Option Sales Tax.
The current half-cent sales tax is up for renewal in 2020. Thirteen projects are vying for the potential funding.
President of the State Street Theater Company Reed Glawe will present the organization’s project.
The proposal, which has been presented to the city council in detail, is for the first phase of renovations at the theater located in the former District 88 building at Center and State streets.
Renovations are proposed for auditorium seating and restrooms. Other possible upgrades include installation of an elevator, orchestra pit and a catering kitchen. This first phase of funding would require $1 million from the sales tax.
The Turner Hall project will be presented by General Manager Virginia Suker Molden and New Ulm Area Gymnastic Academy Board President Jamie Rieser.
The New Ulm Turnverein and New Ulm Area Gymnastic Academy seek to build a gymnastic facility for athletes in New Ulm and the surrounding areas. The gym has been designed to fit on the Turner property.
An elevated track will be included for spectators and to meet the demand for indoor walking. The proposal is only for the first phase of the Turner project and is estimated at $3.4 million.
A second phase would be completed by the Turnverein after funds are secured.
The RENU Committee will meet Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be broadcast live on the community access channel, and it will be placed on the playback schedule.
