Lula vetoes bill that may cut Bolsonaro’s term

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s President Lula da Silva has vetoed a bill that could reduce Jair Bolsonaro’s 27-year prison sentence for his failed 2023 coup attempt. Lula announced the decision Thursday during a ceremony in Brasilia, marking the third anniversary of riots led by Bolsonaro’s supporters. Analysts say Congress could override the veto, but it might be risky ahead of next October’s elections. Lula, a front-runner against Bolsonaro’s son, emphasized the importance of remembering the past to prevent dictatorships. Bolsonaro, ineligible to run until 2033, has other pending cases. His lawyers have requested house arrest due to his health.
