Oil prices jump and markets slide as Iran names new supreme leader and digs in

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Oil prices roared upward and stock markets fell further after Iran fired more drones and missiles across the Persian Gulf and beyond in response to U.S. and Israeli airstrikes, after defiantly choosing hard-line Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei to succeed his late father as Iran’s supreme leader. The continued fighting signaled no letup in a 10-day war that has choked off supplies from a pivotal source of oil and gas to world markets, sent many foreigners scurrying home and prompted millions to shutter themselves indoors or in safety bunkers as bombs hit sites like military bases, government buildings, oil and water installations, hotels and at least one school.

Glasgow building fire closes Scotland’s busiest train station and disrupts rail services

LONDON (AP) — A major fire in the heart of Glasgow crippled Scottish train services Monday as firefighters worked to douse the blaze that destroyed a four-story building next to Scotland’s busiest railway station. Glasgow Central Station was closed and all travel to, from and through the station was expected to be disrupted, according to rail operators. The station was to remain closed Tuesday, and it wasn’t clear when it would reopen. The fire broke out Sunday afternoon in a vape shop on Union Street, next to the station. Flames engulfed the building, filling the frames of windows and shooting from the dome-capped roof.

Lebanese parliament extends term by 2 years as Israel intensifies attacks on Lebanon

BEIRUT (AP) — The Lebanese parliament has extended its term by two years due to the U.S.-Israel war with Iran, which has pushed the region into an escalating conflict, and Israel stepped up its attacks on Lebanon. On Monday, lawmakers approved the move after fighting displaced more than half a million people in Lebanon. Israel also intensifies attacks on Lebanon, saying it targeted Hezbollah’s financial arm, al-Qard al-Hasan, in Beirut’s southern suburbs. Israel also said its ground forces launched “focused raids” in the south of Lebanon. Hezbollah said it hit Israeli troops and fired rockets into northern Israel. Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch accused Israel of using white phosphorus in strikes on a Lebanese village in violation of international law.
