Arlington man identified as Gaylord shooting suspect
GAYLORD — A 48-year-old Arlington man faces a felony second-degree assault charge following a Jan. 12 fight in Gaylord involving a man allegedly shot in the thigh.
Law enforcement was dispatched to a fight in progress on 6th Street in Gaylord Jan. 12. At the scene, a man was found laying face up and motionless on snow and ice., according to Sibley County Court documents. Law enforcement later confirmed the man had sustained a gunshot wound to the upper left thigh.
A man, later identified as Jesus Junior Saldivar of Arlington, was standing over the man with a semi-automatic handgun holstered on his right hip. Authorities removed the handgun from Saldivar and found a round in the gun chamber.
The victim’s wound was bleeding heavily before a tourniquet was applied to his leg and he was transported to a hospital for medical attention. The victim also had a bruise on the left side of his cheek and an abrasion on his lower lip, according to the court records.
The victim told authorities he got into a verbal argument with Saldivar that became physical when Saldivar hit him in the face, a fistfight followed. The victim said Saldivar fell to the ground and he got on top of him. It was after the victim was on top of him that Saldivar shot him. The victim said after he was shot, Saldivar kicked him in the face multiple times.
Saldivar told law enforcement the fight began because the victim was harassing his girlfriend and her family. Saldivar said when he fell to the ground his firearm fell out of its holster. After being pinned by the victim, Saldivar alleged he grabbed the gun from the ground and shot the victim, according to court records.
Statements from other witnesses to the fight said Saldivar’s gun did not fall out of its holster, but he took it from his holster before shooting the vicitm.
Saldivar was arrested and transported to the Sibley County Jail. His unconditional bail was set at $500,000 cash or bond, $10,000 cash or $100,000 bond with conditions in Sibley County District Court Jan. 14. A court hearing was set for 9:45 a.m. Jan. 29.
