At the regular monthly meeting of the city council Tuesday evening it was decided to at once secure definite data with regard to the installation of a filtration system to secure an adequate supply of water for the city of New Ulm. For some time it has been known that the reservoir on the heights west of the city is in a poor state of preservation. Because of this fact and to insure adequate fire protection and a water supply for all purposes, some action is necessary.

The sinking of deep wells and their equipment is a source of continued expense, with no end in sight. If a change in the method of securing an adequate water supply is not made a new reservoir must be constructed.

Owing to this fact the council determined that the most expeditious way out of the difficulty is the construction of a filtration plant and to secure the water from the Minnesota river.

Matter Up Some Time Ago

This matter was broached by Superintendent H. H. Huevelman some months ago. At the meeting of the council Tuesday evening it was decided to secure definite information as to cost and capacity for the purpose of advertising for bids for the installation of the plant, which it is proposed to place on the site of the old electric light building.

Tax Levy $125,000

The tax levy for the ensuing year was fixed at $125,000. This is considerable of an increase over any preceding levy, but after an analysis of the situation is made it is not so much of a spread, when compared with other levies, as would at first seem.

Last year the levy was fixed at $60,000. But in addition the state levied $20,400 for the payment of state loan and the interest. This made the levy $80,400. During the past year the city retired $20,000 in bonds. This caused an overdraft in the interest and sinking fund of $20,000. This must be replaced. The money was secured from other funds, and therefore did not cost the city any interest charges. The city thus saved the interest on the bonds retired. Considering the retirement of the bonds the levy was in reality $100,400last year, and therefore the levy this year is but $24,600 greater.

The levy provides for sufficient funds to replenish the interest and sinking fund to the extent of $20,000, of which it was depleted for the retirement of the bonds the past year.
