Celebrate the day
Off the Shelf
There is a celebration for every day of the year if you are looking for something to celebrate. I hope these upcoming daily celebrations make you smile or maybe inspire a trip to the library to look for a book to help you celebrate the day in style.
Sat. June 28 Tau Day. “Tau Day, celebrated annually on June 28th, is a mathematical holiday dedicated to the circle constant tau (τ), which is equal to 2π (approximately 6.28318). It’s a celebration of the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its radius, according to Tau Day.” I don’t understand the math, but I’m on board with celebrating Tau Day by eating circle-shaped things like pizza or pie. Checkout “Pizza Night” by Alexandra Stafford (641.8248 Staffor) or “Pie is Messy” by Rebecca Grasley (641.8652 Grasley). Also celebrated on June 28th is National Paul Bunyan Day. You can visit Paul and Babe the Blue Ox in Brainerd and if you are looking for things to do along the way don’t forget to take along “100 Things to Do in Minnesota Before You Die” by Julie Jo Larson (917.604 Larson).
Sun. June 29 National Camera Day. New book alert – “How to Photograph Absolutely Everything” by Tom Ang (771 Ang). National Waffle Iron Day is also June 29. Check out “Will It Waffle? Yes, It Will” by Daniel Shumski (641.5 Shumski). Looking at waffled cakes, sandwiches and even pizza crust is making me hungry!
Mon. June 30 National Corvette Day. “Corvette: The Enduring Legend” by Nicky Wright (629.2222 Wright) is a beautiful photo book featuring all models of Corvettes. Celebrate International Asteroid Day on Mon. June 30 as well. How about reading up on the possible dangers of killer asteroids in “Fire in the Sky: Cosmic Collisions. Killer Asteroids. And the Race to Defend Earth” by Gordon L. Dillow (523.44 Dillow)?
Tuesday July 1 National Creative Ice Cream Flavor Day. If you are looking for recipes for out-of-the-ordinary ice cream flavors, you need to check out “Wanderlust Creamery Presents the World of Ice Cream” by Adrienne Borlongan (641.862 Borlong). For National Gingersnap Day on Tues. July 1, you can’t go wrong with “The Cookie Bible” by Rose Levy Beranbaum (641.8654 Beranba) for a classic Gingersnap recipe or any other kind of cookie for that matter.
Wednesday July 2 World UFO Day. Are we alone? Find out in “UFO: The Inside Story of the US Government’s Search for Alien Life Here-and Out There” by Garrett M. Graff (576.839 Graff). In honor of National Wildland Firefighter Day (July 2) and all the courageous firefighters that fight the ever-increasing wildfires in our country, read “The Fire Line: The Story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots and One of the Deadliest Days in American Firefighting” by Fernanda Santos (363.37 Santos).
