Off the Shelf: Don’t forget your library card!

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month. We’d love for those of you who do not have a library card to stop by the library and sign up for one. With your card you get access to books, audiobooks, digital materials, movies, magazines, music, newspapers, puzzles, WiFi hot spots, and more! Your New Ulm Public Library card also gives you access to materials from other Minnesota libraries, which can be delivered for you to pick up locally at the New Ulm Public Library. The wealth of resources to which this 3.5 x 2 inch piece of plastic gives you access is almost unbelievable!

With great power comes great responsibility. Our patrons are fantastic and we love that so many of you are such frequent visitors that we know so many of you by name and face! However, with a large community of library users comes the moment when library staff just can’t match a name to a face and we want to make sure that all of our patrons have access to the same excellent library experience.

With that in mind, starting October 1, New Ulm Public Library will require all patrons to present either their physical library card or a photo ID to check out materials. By requiring our patrons to present their library card, New Ulm Public Library is ensuring that all patrons have the same efficient and positive experience in using the materials that we collect, curate, and caretake for this community. Having your library card with you allows staff to help you quickly, maintain an accurate accounting of our collection, and provide equal service to all of our patrons, no matter whether you’re a regular or a newcomer.

We know that some of you may have misplaced your library card or used it so frequently that it has worn out. From September 3 to 30, we will waive the $1 replacement card fee and issue a replacement card on the spot! Don’t hesitate to stop by and get your replacement card! Starting October 1, every patron will be required to present their library card or a photo ID to check out materials.

We thank you for helping us to continue to improve the services that New Ulm Public Library provides to the community and we encourage you to stop by in September to sign up for a card, replace yours, or continue to access the wealth of resources we offer. It’s the most important card in your wallet!
