Santa Claus came in on a norther Wednesday evening of last week. The thermometer dropped to six degrees below zero during the night and brought real Christmas weather. A light snowfall covered the terrain and made southern Minnesota look real Christmasy, but the snowfall was not sufficient to cause any delay in train service or act as an impediment to auto travel. The highways leading to New Ulm were in excellent condition and large numbers of people traveled to and from this city to enjoy the Christmas holiday. It was rather cold, but with heaters in cars the going was not uncomfortable.
Cold Snap
The thermometer: dropped to four-teen degrees below zero on Christmas night. The wind was keen and cut like a knife. Business was almost suspended in New Ulm following the Christmas holiday. This was the first quiet Saturday local business houses have had since early fall. Saturday night the mercury in the bulb dropped to thirteen degrees below zero and Sunday night to seven degrees below.Monday was clear and cold but the weather moderated some during the day.
Low Point Monday Night
The low point of the recent cold snap was Monday night, when the mercury sagged to fifteen degrees below zero. But the following day was a bright, clear and an enjoyable winter day. The mercury rose to nearly the freezing point.
The drop in temperature was wide-spread and covered a large section of the Middle states, reaching into Texas. Low temperatures were recorded all over the Mississippi valley and in Florida smudge pots were employed to keep fruit from freezing.
