Contributing to the metropolitan air of New Ulm is the Yellow Cab Company, owned and operated by Carl Stienberg. Up to two years ago this city was without an exclusive Cab Company and it was then that the local young man conceived the idea of providing some commercial means of transportation for the citizens of this community. The venture has proven a successful one and today New Ulm has taxi service which is prompt and efficient.

Mr. Steinberg returned to New Ulm from a trip down South late in the summer of 1923. For a time he was employed at the South Side Garage and while there he had occasion to note the number of calls which came in for taxi service. In as much as that garage was not providing a taxi service, the young man made his plans for starting in the taxi business for himself. He purchased a Ford cab and arranged his headquarters at the South Side Garage and announced to the public that he would answer calls starting November 25. Two months later business demanded the addition of a second cab and the owner purchased another Ford January 1, 1924.

During the summer of 1924 an Oakland sedan was added to the fleet of cabs and the name of the company was changed to “Carl’s Taxi”. A truck was added at the same time and the carrying of baggage was added to the business of the local concern. January 1, 1925, the business was moved from the South Side Garage to the Breocker Garage where temporary quarters were occupied until February 1, when the present location was taken at the rear of the Old Commercial Hotel.

Have Genuine Yellow Cab

In July a genuine “yellow cab”was purchased and it was at this time that Carl’s Taxi became known as the Yellow Cab Company. The business is located at 513 First South street in a frame building, one story high and which measures 30 by 40 feet. This modern garage affords plenty of space for the storage of the four cars used in the business. A spacious room is fitted up with mechanical tools and Mr. Steinberg does all the repair work on his automobiles. The office is arranged at the front of the building and here all calls are received.

Conducts Auto Laundry

In the same building a space has been given over to the Auto Laundry, which is conducted in connection with the taxi business. A large wash rack is provided, boilers have been installed to supply hot water, and here the cars are washed, polished and greased and the motors are thoroughly cleaned by means of special apparatus. This feature became a popular part of the business during the past summer, the manager having started the work May 15. The business has warranted the continuance of the auto laundry and patrons will continue to receive record service and efficient workmanship throughout the entire year. With the special equipment it is possible to wash a car and complete the operation in one hour’s time, whereas when cold water, etc, is used, it takes three hours. Thus a saving of time on the part of the mechanic means a saving of money for the patron. A neat supply of polishes, greases, and oils is stocked and curb pumps have been installed recently for the sale of gasoline. Water is also provided and a free air device will be installed in the spring.

Licensed Drivers Employed

Two licensed drivers, besides Mr. Steinberg, are employed and calls are answered at any hour of the day or night. Prompt and dependable service has built up a large patronage for the only taxi company in New Ulm. During the month of November 1,156 passengers were carried. This is a record for operation in a city the size of New Ulm. In the past year Mr. Steinberg states that business has increased more than 50 per cent over the previous year. From December 1 to May 1, during the season when local people have put their cars away for the winter, business of the Yellow Cab Company is greatest. Rates are given to daily customers who patronize the local firm. Lowest rates, quickest service and most comfortable riding are qualities which have made the firm successful.

Efficient Service Given

This service in the taxi line provided for the residents of New Ulm and the immediate vicinity who call on the local firm. Trips are made to all trains and passengers are often carried to surrounding towns. In this manner the Yellow Cab Company provides a comfort to citizens which has heretofore not been enjoyed and the operation of the company makes our city more metropolitan not only in the splendid service rendered but it also impresses visitors who chance to see the painted cabs traveling the main thoroughfares of our “City Beautiful”.
