Petty larceny by young boys in the neighborhood has been becoming so great during the past few months that city and county officials in charge of law enforcement decided to make an example out of one of the cases. Wednesday afternoon Leo Simmet and Erwin Baltus plead guilty before Justice Fred Pfaender to the charge of stealing turkeys from the Henry Diepolder farm, located north of the city. The boys who are seventeen and eighteen years old were given a sentence of sixty days in the county jail but upon the suggestion of the county attorney the sentence was suspended for six months and the boys ordered to report to the Justice every month and give definite information as to their earnings and spendings and also their actions during the month.

On two different occasions the boys went to the Diepolder farm where they helped themselves to Mr. Diepolder’s turkeys, the first time around November 21 and the second time around the first of December. Their raid on the turkey coops netted them fourteen nicely fatted turkey gobblers which they brought into New Ulm and hilled and dressed at the Baltus home on South Minnesota Street. The birds were then taken to Stork Bros. where they were sold and a total of $43.50 received for them. An investigation by the authorities brought forth the fact that the boys were the culprits and they were taken in charge and brought into court. The two lads consented to pay Mr. Diepolder for his loss and will also have to pay the costs of the court expense. This case should serve as a warning to the rest of the youths in the city who make a practice of petty larceny for if they are caught the chances are that they will be bound over to the district court and no doubt receive a penitentiary or reform school sentence.

Break Into Leonard Place

Tuesday morning when Herbert Me Ivor came to open up the soft drink parlor of Dave Leonard for the day he noticed that the side door was open and that the cash register was also partly open. Upon looking around he noticed that the safe had also been opened and papers strewn around the floor. The gum-vending machine in the place was lying on its side someone evidently having tried to open it and obtain the money which was inside.

Get $15. In Change

Opening the cash register MeIvor noticed that the change was all gone and an investigation of the safe showed that five dollars in nickels which had left in the safe the night before had also disappeared. All told the culprits got away with $15. The chief of police was notified and investigations were made and it is expected that an arrest will follow in a short time. The robbery is evidently the work of some young boys in the city and if brought to justice the culprits will no doubt have a jail sentence to serve.
