Monday evening the city council awarded contracts totaling close to $50,000 and at the same time put out a call for bids for further improvements which might bring another $50,000 outlay. However, this does not mean that the taxpayers at large have to pay for this outlay as the majority of it will be paid for by the property owners to whose property the benefits will accrue.
Award Boulevard Project
Puhlman Bros. of this city were awarded the contract for the curbing and guttering to be done on the boulevard project on Broadway, between Fifth North streets and Fifth South streets. Their bid in the sum of $13,681 was found to be the lowest of the five bids entered in this class. The New Ulm Ice Co. was awarded the contract for the grading on this project at a price of $4959.49. There were only two bidders for this section of the work, the other bidder, The Dearborn Construction Co. of Chicago bidding $4680.17 but stipulating that the bid must be considered jointly with their bid on the grading. Following are the other bids received for the curbing and guttering: Bernard S. Andrus, So. St. Paul, $16,011.73; Noble Peterson, Windom, $14,379; Dearborn Construc-tion Co., Waterloo, Ia., $16,662.54; Simmonson & Emstad, Albert Lea, $15,006.77.
The lighting fixtures, including the standard, globes, cable and conduit were awarded to the Northwestern Electric Equipment Co. of St.Paul, the total amount of the bid being $3,678.71. This included $1158 for posts, which are of metal, $1509.51 for cable and conduit and $1,011.20 for the lanterns or globes. There were several other bidders for both globes and standards but the above were the lowest and most satisfactory.
Award Coal Contract
Another saving of several thousand dollars was made by the city on Monday evening when the coal bids were awarded. The Ender Coal & Coke Co. of Chicago were the successful bidders and were awarded the contract for delivering 5000 tons 2 ” screenings at a price of $4.91 a ton f. o. b. New Ulm. Last year the city paid $5.56 per ton for its coal delivered which means that the city will save 65c a ton this year which amounts to over $3000. There were seventeen bidders in the field this year and while there were two that were a trifle lower the council upon recommendation of Superintendent H. H. Huwvelmann decided upon the Enger coal as the quality of the other two grades was unknown. The superintendent informed the council that the Enger coal tested the highest of any coal and for that reason with its low price would mean a further saving to the city.
Present Paving Petition
A committee of residents residing on North Minnesota presented a petition to the council signed by practically 40 percent. of the property owners asking for the curbing and paving of the five blocks between Third North Street and Eighth North Street. The council adopted a resolution setting the 14th of Septem-ber as the time when all persons objecting or desiring to be heard upon this prop-osition should appear before the council.
Drop Lowest Water Rates
A move which will effect the big users of water in this city was made by the council when they passed an ordinance cutting the last two rates of our present water rate. This does not affect the small consumer in the least as his rate remains the same but effects only those who made use of the rate lower than 2c per thousand gallons. The rates as they will be in force after Sept. 15 are as follows: 5c first thousand gallons,4 1-2c second thousand gallons, 4c third thousand gallons, 3 1-2c fourth thousand gallons, 3e fifth thousand gallons, 2-1-2e sixth thousand gallons, everything over sixth thousand gallons 2c per thousand gallons.
Call For Further Bids
The council ordered the city clerk to advertise for bids for the curbing and guttering of several side streets, bids to be opened Sept. 14th. The plans and specifications as prepared by the city engineer were adopted by the council and includes work on the following streets: Center street from State to the M. & St. L. tracks; Second North Street from State to German Street; Second South Street from State to German St; 1st No. St. from Minnesota to the M. &.
