New Ulm’s Legion Memorial Swimming Pool is now complete – on paper. The plans have been perfected, bids received, and contractors are “raring to go.” There remains to be determined only one thing, that is the civic spirit and enthusiasm of the citizens of New Ulm.
Long Felt Need Realized
The Legion Memorial Swimming Pool is the logical outgrowth of Ben J. Siefert Post’s desire to help in some definite way in civic improvement. Many years ago the question of a community swimming pool was actively discussed, the matter even being considered by the City Council In its first plans this spring, the Legion contemplated nothing further than a temporary dam in the Cottonwood River near Metzen’s Bridge.
Contact was made with a Sioux City firm whose sole business was the building of community swimming and wading pools, and it was planned to have this company install the Pool here.
A committee of business men and Legionnaires drove to Sioux City and Merrill, Iowa, and after inspecting the pools constructed and in process of construction at those places decided that New Ulm’s needs were such that a different type of construction would more surely meet with the approval of the city.
The City Council very generously offered the services of the City Engineer F.D. Minium, and thru this work and that of Architect Alb. G. Plagens; plans have been completed for the erection of a pool that will meet New Ulm’s needs for many years to come.
Legion In Temporary Charge
The Legion’s idea in the project is to have active and actual charge of the pool for twelve years or until the project has been cleared of all indebtedness. At the end of twelve years the pool will be turned over to the City of New Ulm to be kept and operated permanently as a Community project.
Financing Plan
The financing plan is complete and the committee will start Monday to offer bonds to the public. These bonds will bear interest at five per cent and will be payable from the earnings of the pool, one twelfth being retired each year. The finance committee is composed of the following men- Harry Brand, chairman; J. A. Ochs, Jos. Epple, Jr., A. Hummel, M. J. Bieber and Roman Lindemann.
The accompanying picture is of the outer side and entrance to the bathhouse. A view of the pool and the face of the bathhouse will be ready for the next issue of the Review and will show the beauty and utility of the project. Mr. Plagens, as architect, has surpassed himself in designing this building, which is agreed by all bidders to be one of the most beautiful and at the same time most practical design they have ever figured on.
Description Of Pool
The pool itself will be of concrete throughout, 75 x 180 feet, with a 10 foot sidewalk completely surrounding the pool, all to be enclosed in ornamental fence, five and one half feet high. The water purifying equipment has met with the approval of the State Board of Health, and will consist of chlorinating outfits and pressure filters, which will repurify all of the water in the pool once in each 24 hours.
This entire project should appeal strongly to every citizen of the community. As New Ulm’s Memorial project it deserves the united support of the community. As e united support of the community. As a practical means of enjoyment for young and old alike, its advantages are unsurpassed. As an outlet for youthful energy, an opportunity for healthful exercise long denied the older people of this community, this swimming pool project fills a great need. Mothers need no longer worry about the youngsters swimming in the river among all the snags and obstructions with no one to watch over them. Dads can play the evening round of golf or game of tennis, and get the cool plunge without messing up the house. Kids may wade all day and have their games and amusements around the pool under the watchful care of the guards.
The pool will be advertised locally and nationally and it is safe to predict that it will attract visitors from all points within a radius of 50 miles. As planned now the pool will be open to the children six days of the week, a charge being made for children evenings and holidays if necessary to make room for adults at those times. Coupon books will be sold to adults, making it convenient for all to take their plunge at any convenient time. Suits and towels will be furnished at the pool.
Residents of this city will appreciate the efforts of the local post of the American Legion in their attempts to provide this city with a necessity which has long been evident. The project is one of the most worthy undertaken for some time and there is no doubt but what the local workers will meet with success in their drive which they will start Monday. Be at business Monday and do your share toward putting this project over successfully. It needs every man and woman in New Ulm. Every child, and every man and woman in the city will benefit from the pool when it has once become a reality. Do your share to insure the construction of the pool this summer. As soon as the bonds have been issued the construction work will start and the pool will be ready for use in a comparatively short time. This swimming pool will advertise New Ulm far and wide and will attract many people who would other wise go to other points to spend their week ends so that they may enjoy an occasional swim. New Ulm will not fail. Everything is ready. Let’s go.
