RURAL SCHOOLS ARE NOW ALL CLOSED

Superintendent B. B. Kennedy States That Past Year Has Been Excellent One In Brown County.

NO SCARCITY TEACHERS AS SEVERAL YEARS AGO

Expects to Have Sufficient

High-Class Instructors for

Next Year Early by Fall.

——–

The last of the rural schools of Brown county closed for the summer vacation Friday. On previous Fridays during the past months schools in the different districts have been closing, and Friday the last quota of teachers bid their scholars goodbye, locked the shutters and doors for the summer months, turned the keys over to the school clerk and left for home, to enjoy the heated spell in various ways.

Superintendent Active

Superintendent R. B. Kennedy has made the Standard Oil company considerably richer during the past several months, because of the many miles he has driven his “fliver,” in visiting the different rural schools of the county. County superintendents are required by law to visit each school district under their jurisdiction at least twice during the school year. This is no small task and keeps the genial superintendent on the road most of the time during the fall and spring months. Mr. Kennedy exceeds the legal requirement and many of the schools are visited three times. Consider the hundreds of miles Superintendent Kennedy must travel each year to perform this duty and it will be seen that he has sufficient to keep him busy.

No Scarcity of Teachers

During the past year there was no scarcity of teachers in Brown county. It is anticipated that before school time arrives next fall that every district in the county will be supplied with a first-class instructor for the fall term. Some years ago there was a pronounced scarcity of teachers throughout this section and it was most difficult for Superintendent Kennedy to secure a sufficient number to fill the positions in the rural districts. This condition does not prevail at the present time. It is expected applications will be on file with the county superintendent to fill all vacancies in the county prior to the opening of school next fall.

Excellent Year

The past year has been an excellent school year throughout Brown county. In fact, each year sees improvement in the county’s rural schools. The school year is gradually being lengthened in the rural districts and a better grade of teachers are being employed. This is reflected in the work of the scholars. Years ago when but a few months of school was held each year, conditions were far different than they are now. The value of a school year of eight or nine months is brought home to the directors of the rural districts and the tendency is to lengthen the school year, rather than to hold it down to the minimum required by law.
