Prof. F. B. Andreen, superintendent of schools at Ada, this state, for the past five years, was unanimously elected to succeed Prof. Arnold Gloor, resigned, as head of the New Ulm public schools, at a special meeting of the board,of education, late Thursday afternoon. The new superintendent, in a message received by President Alfred W. Mueller, Friday morning, accepted the action of the board. Prof. Andreen is married and has two children a daughter and a baby son, born a few weeks ago.

Eighty-Five Applicants

It was decidedly no easy matter for the local board to make a selection from about eighty-five applicants, who were candidates for the superintendency here. After thorough investigation, Prof. Andreen was finally chosen, his general qualifications being considered among the beat of those submitted. One of his outstanding characteristics is said to be the happy faculty of combining strict, but Just discipline with a proper understanding of present-day school needs. Although but 30 years of age, Prof. Andreen has theoretical and practical knowledge, and his congenial personality has endeared him to the people of Ada, and especially to the school children and their parents.

Qualifications

The new superintendent is a bachelor of arts graduate of Gustavus Adolphus college, St. Peter; a bachelor of law graduate of the La Salle Extension university, and has completed more than one-half of his work for a master’s degree at the North Dakota university with all grades A plus. During the World war, Prof, Andreen was an officer in the U. S. Army-infantry and intelligence department for two years, from 1917 to 1919. He was superintendent of schools at Beardsley, this state, in 1919 and 1920, and since the latter year has held a like position at Ada.

Prof. Andreen introduced and perfected the use of socialized recitation, introduced the use of standardized tests and provided for special instruction where they revealed weaknesses; reorganized the courses in reading, spelling, social sciences and industrial arts so as to more nearly meet the needs of pupils in active life, his article on this reorganization being published in the May issue of the American Educational Digest, and during the years that he has been superintendent at Ada, he has gradually decreased the school expenditures from $51,980 in 1921-1922 to $36,895 in 1924-1925.

Highly Recommended

Letters received by members of the local board from instructors at Gustavus Adolphus college, members of the Ada and Beardsley school boards and prominent business and professional men, there, highly recommend Prof. Andreen as an able instructor and exemplary citizen. He is also highly commended by the colonel of the infantry regiment, to which he was attached as a first lieutenant during the World war. People of Ada express regret at his departure.

An Able Speaker

During his student years at Gustavus Adolphus college, Prof. Amdreen distinguished himself as an orator and debater and as a student leader in general, in addition to ranking far above the average in scholarly ability. He has had considerable experience in the forensic field and is in demand as a public speaker.
