MOONSHINE KILLS TRUMAN FARMER
August Zemple, Aged 38, Succumbs to Convulsions, After Drinking a Concoction of Lemon Essence and Alcohol, the Latter Having Been Obtained in New Ulm, It Is Claimed.–Wife Died While Family Resided Here.-Three Little Children.
——–
August Zemple, aged 38 years, a farmer residing north of Truman, passed away at the Madelia hospital, Sunday evening of last week. His death was due to convulsions, caused by drinking a concoction of lemon essence and alcohol, the latter obtained at New Ulm, according to the man’s statement. The end came after days of intense suffering, although at last he was unconscious.
Zemple is survived by three small children, who are orphans, their mother having died in September last year, while the family resided in Nev Ulm.
It is said that Zemple started out for Mankato after partaking of the deadly concoction. At Vernon Center he was seized with terrible convulsions. After receiving medical attention, he seemed to rally and was taken home in his car. Convulsions again seized him and neighbors took him to the Madelia hospital, where he died. The attending physician said that the liquor appeared to have resulted in hemorrhage of the brain. The death certificate gave the cause of Zempel’s demise as “moonshine poisoning.”
