NEW ULM – Brad and Cindy Reinhart have been married for 42 years.

They have six kids together; three boys and three girls, which they feel is a lot like the Brady Bunch. Brad is proudest of his family, and very proud of New Ulm. His family history here goes all the way back to the1800s.

“We were here for the war,” said Brad Reinhart.

He attended Cathedral for all of his schooling through high school. While his first job was at a store called Oswald Pictures, he spent most of his life working with Joel Albright, a former New Ulm mayor, at the bowling alley. At the time of retirement, Brad worked for Frito Lay.

“When I retired, Joel got me started on watering the flowers downtown, the ones that hang on main street and the pots,” Brad Reinhart said. “The city has this little car to drive and that’s what makes it fun. I water in the summer through October. There’s mostly two people driving, but I always drive alone.

“I start at 6 am. There’s not many people down there so I can get them done, but I just like it. I enjoy seeing the business owners when they come out and open the stores. I’m there watering four to five days in a week. The hanging ones get water every day and the ones on the ground 2 or 3 times a week; it depends on rain.”

“There’s a water conditioner and a fertilizer in the mix that’s why they look so pretty,” said Cindy Reinhart. “Brad is really into the city–he enjoys getting to know people. He’s out there talking and being friendly. He has a lot of pride for the city, anything that makes it better. He likes talking to people finding out that they really enjoy the flowers, and that’s rewarding to Brad.”

At 76, Brad stays active by keeping up with the flowers, being on a bowling league, and working part-time at Cash Wise liquor.

“He used to be in softball,” said Cindy, “and he said he’d do that until he was 99, but there wasn’t enough teams. Now he is gonna bowl until he can’t move anymore.”

Cindy gives back to the community by decorating their rhino lawn sculpture for all of the holidays, festivals, and homecomings.

“It goes with our name, Reinhart. You know rhino / Reinhart,” she said. “Brad helps me come up with ideas, and he takes pictures and posts it on Facebook Page, New Ulm Now and Then, so people who can’t get out can still see it.”

“A lot of times it’s so nice when kids walk by with parents if they want to ride on him,” said Brad Reinhart.

“It’s fine as long as a parent is there,” said Cindy Reinhart.

They originally acquired the rhino from Cash Wise for $100 which was the best offer.

“We were meant to have it,” said Cindy. “We had it delivered with a tow truck on a platform.”

“New Ulm is the best place to live. I like everything about living in New Ulm,” said Brad Reinhart. “Things are so different now from the way it was when we were growing up. It feels like younger people’s loyalties can switch so fast and they’re not getting married as much or having kids. The world will get smaller.”

“When he’s loyal to something he stays,” said Cindy Reinhart “He always says, you can go out and check out over there, but you can always come back and probably find out that they love it back home.”

Starting at $4.50/week.
